BARRION CALLEN (We have a Letter of Intent from Joshua Malina to play this role pending availability), a 437 year-old sorcerer, lives in a lovely Massachusetts home and teaches Philosophy at Boston University. Even as he seeks to open the minds of his students to the magnificent diversity of reality, he guards carefully the secrets of his true nature. One does not live to be 437 in this world without an awareness of xenophobic intolerance; obscurity is naturally the first line of defense for an ancient sorcerer.

MARJORY KERN(We have a Letter of Intent from Morgan Fairchild to play this role and have promised her first dibs on it), Sandy’s mother, was once a hippy-chick, then a shiksa goddess and is now a single parent with fairly deep pockets and an even deeper sense of responsibility to her beloved daughter. Open-hearted, generous by nature, loving and nurturing and protective, she would willingly walk through the very gates of Hades to keep an eye on Sandy and, as things develop, she may have to do just that. By the end of the pilot episode she will have fully accepted the bizarre complexities of the hidden world of which her daughter has become a part, she will have slept with GAINE, the Hero Demon of Chelm and she will have become a vital and entirely human part of the team.

SANDY KERN (We have a Letter of Intent from Rachel Boston to play this role), one of Barrion's students. Her natural talent for sorcery leads her to become his titular apprentice. Young enough to act impulsively she manipulates the powerful forces at her disposal fearlessly with far less respect for the dangers they pose than Barrion would like to see maintained. She will have learned of his age and his abilities by the end of the pilot episode as will her single mother, MARJORY KERN.

GAINE BREDDYLDOCH, a relatively good-natured demon summoned from Limbo by Sandy as a thesis project, convinces Barrion and Sandy to let him stay.  Too kind spirited to get along with other demons, he is, nonetheless, an occasional trouble-maker.  He has a keen understanding of the laws of sorcery and can provide a good deal of inside information about the goings on beyond the first veil and a fair amount about what goes on beyond the second and third veils as well.  Although demonlaw does not always follow the same moralistic and ethical guidelines as human law – or even human decency – it does carry its own internal logic and Gaine has his own powerful sense of honor and dignity.  Combine these with the strict rules imposed upon him by a binding agreement with Sandy and he becomes most useful and powerful ally.  By the end of the pilot episode he will also have seduced and become the lover of Sandy’s mom, Marjory.

DEMETRIUS WAGNER (does not appear in the pilot episode) is a young African American man whose father sometimes works with the team as a consulting detective. Demetrius, a bit younger than Sandy, falls for her at once, and over the course of the first season works his way into her heart and onto the team.

DEIRDRE WINSLOW (We have a Letter of Intent from Laraine Newman to play this role), a woman who serves with him as faculty in the Philosophy Department is Barrion's lover and confidante. She knows Barrion's secrets and loves him despite the four hundred year age difference. Winslow’s cool head and ready intellect make her an excellent problem-solver, often finding solutions that might elude more linear-thinking folk. A background in martial arts makes her unlikely ever to become a damsel-in-distress.

Barrion's 964 year-old father PROSPER, presently exploring a distant region beyond the ninth veil, plays regularly as a figure in Barrion's life. At first he is played by an older male. In the third season, he comes to be played by an eleven year-old girl.
