THINKING ALLOWED began in the early 2000s as a bi-weekly show on the IMPROV’s main stage. The first all story-telling show in the venue, conceived, hosted and headlined by then-StandUp! Records artist Dylan Brody, it gave comics an opportunity to work in long form, story-tellers opportunities to work on the main stage of the historic IMPROV, and Brody an opportunity to introduce comedy club audiences and management to the wonder of humor that draws an audience further into an idea than may be allowed by the modern metrics of industrialized comedy.
Brody says, “Television has trained everyone to expect at least four or five laughs per minute. Just giving an audience a full minute to listen in silence on the way to a laugh or an idea or an image, feels revelatory.”
In this, its newest iteration, Brody presents a hilarious and poignant solo show on the crushing urgency of the arts and the sciences in times of social upheaval, unrest and catastrophe. Now adding original songs to his arsenal of engaging and extraordinary performance techniques, Brody uses intimate and personal stories to build a case for social change and radical acceptance as a force for evolutionary change. In dark times, he brings the possibility of optimism.
PAUL PROVENZA SAYS, “He treats comedy as literature.”
DAVID SEDARIS SAYS, “Dylan is funny in ways that don’t remind me of anyone.”
